The title of this story is “Dog can’t swim” by an unknown author. It is about a man who hears about a special dog. He goes out to a lake to see the hunter and his dog. When the man asks to see what is so special about the dog, the man shoots a few birds. When the dog runs to retrieve them, he runs on the water without sinking in. The man is not impressed. He sees this amazing talent as a flaw and says, “Your dog can’t swim!”, only seeing the negativity of the situation.
This story is all about the different ways that people perceive a situation. Some people are very positive and only see the good things in life. Others are negative and only see the bad things that happen in life. Sometimes, my sisters can be very negative. If one gets a Slurpee and the other gets ice cream, they are jealous of what the other has. They don’t see the positive, they got a treat, they only see the negative, they didn’t get what they wanted. I try to set a good example and get them to see the positive, but other times I just move on and use it as a lesson to always be positive because it could always be worse.
I think that Austus(Respect) is the best character pillar for this story. This story is based on attitude, so there really isn’t a character pillar that fits in to the story, but respect is closest. Respect involves being considerate of the feelings of others, being tolerant of differences, and dealing peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements. I live my life based on respect. I respect everyone I meet until they prove to me that they don’t deserve it. I treat everyone with kindness and deal with anger, insults, and disagreements in a calm and professional way. Respect is very important because no one would agree and negativity and hate would be everywhere. Respect creates a positive and professional environment.
Respect- a courteous expression (by word or deed) of esteem or regard
Negativity-the disagreeable quality of one who dissents
